Apple has unveiled a fourth generation of its Apple Watch, with a bigger screen and thinner body. “Everything about it has been redesigned and re-engineered,” Apple said.

The new Apple Watch Series 4 features an edge-to-edge display, allowing the watch’s display to be over 30pc larger than previous watches. The watch is also thinner than previous versions.

Apple’s Jeff Williams said the Apple Watch has become an “intelligent guardian” for user health through its health and fitness features, and revealed the new device had improved sensors which can now detect if a user falls, and notify key contacts if necessary.

Apple revealed the new Apple Watch Series 4 at an event in California, where it also unveiled the new iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max.

The software for the new Apple Watch Series 4 has been redesigned to make use of the larger screens. A new watch face has also added with up to eight complications, showing extra information on the watch face.

The Apple Watch Series 4 will be available in silver, gold and space grey finishes, and also stainless steel variants. A new gold stainless steel version will also be released.

Pre-orders for the device will open on September 14, and Apple said it will go on sale on September 21. Additionally, Watch OS 5, the latest version of its Apple’s watch operating system, will be released on September 17
